What housing programs are available?

Donna Housing Authority administers Public Housing and the Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly known as Section 8. Public Housing units are owned by the housing authority, while Housing Choice Vouchers help eligible households rent qualifying homes in the private market.

Who may qualify for housing assistance?

Eligibility generally depends on household income, family size, citizenship or eligible immigration status, and program requirements. Income limits vary by household size and are based on limits published by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

How do I apply?

Applications are accepted only when the applicable waiting list is open. Review the application process for current instructions and required documentation.

What documents may be required?

The pre-application process may require:

• Photo identification for every adult household member age 18 or older

Additional documents may be requested to verify household income, composition and eligibility.

Why is there a waiting list?

Demand for housing assistance may exceed the number of available units or vouchers. Applicants are therefore placed on a waiting list and contacted when assistance becomes available. When a list is closed, additional applications are not accepted until it reopens.

What happens when my name reaches the top of the waiting list?

The housing authority will contact you to schedule an interview and complete the final application. Information supplied by the household will be verified for accuracy and eligibility.

How is my rent calculated?

The tenant payment is determined under program rules using household income and allowable deductions. The Donna Housing Authority application information identifies calculations that may include 30% of monthly adjusted income, 10% of monthly gross income or an applicable minimum payment. The actual amount is established after the household’s information is verified.

Can a Housing Choice Voucher be used for any home?

Voucher participants may look for eligible private-market housing, including apartments, townhouses and single-family homes. The property, owner and lease must be approved, and the unit must satisfy applicable housing quality requirements.

What are a participant’s responsibilities?

Can landlords participate?
